SUPPLIES
- Charcoal: compressed, vine, and charcoal pencils
- White Mars Eraser
- Kneaded Eraser
- Chamois
- 1 sheet of 18” x 24” drawing paper that you used in class
- Your arm and hand
In your homework you will continue to explore line weight and gesture drawing. You will draw your hand extending out from your forearm four times on the same sheet of paper that you began in class. Your arm and hand should be drawn as if moving across the page, like stop animation. Begin the drawing of your arm and hand the same way that we began the gesture drawings in class- simple lines that go through the form and relate to the form’s directional movement. Consider how you compose your arm and hand on the page. Is there a sense of movement from one drawing to the other? Loosely draw out each of the 4 poses on the page before adding more specificity to the individual forms. As you work on your drawing pay close attention to where the muscles in your hand and arm are tense or strained. Consider how you will convey these feelings in your drawing by using line weight. Use a variety of line weights. Do this by controlling the pressure you put on the charcoal. Make sure to try out all of your drawing materials, including the chamois and erasers. Think of your chamois and erasers as drawing tools. Examine the different effects and tones that the different materials in your kit make. Using the pentimenti from the previous drawing successfully will require vigorous erasing, creative use of composition and dramatic line weight.
Your drawing should be roughly the same size or larger then your actual hand and arm.
- Completion of requirements on time
- Proportions and specificity of hands and arms

- Use of line weight and mark to show space, movement, weight, emphases and character of drawing.
- Composition, use of whole page.
- Am I using the whole page?
- How smooth is the transition between one pose and another?
- Are the poses of your hand interesting/creative?
- I am I working general to specific?
- How am I showing the interior mass and planes of the hand and arm?
- Could I use cross-contours to show volume?
- How am I using detail to create a sense of space and emphases?
- Am I using scale change to show movement through space?
- How am I using line weight?
- What is the quality of line? Does it change from one hand to another?
- Have I tried all of the materials in my kit?
- What are the differences between the materials and how can that help me in my drawing?
