Homework Assignment 2#: A Series of Color and Composition Part 2

Part II
Due May 7th
Composition with Warms and Cools

Now that you have several photos to work from you will begin to analyze and develop your composition. Composition is the organization of the positive and negative shapes on a two-dimensional surface. It is affected by the placement of positive and negative shapes within the frame of the drawing and the value and the color of those shapes. In this week’s homework you will explore how changing the color and the value of those shapes can change the visual impact of the drawing.
To begin: Chose one of your photo references to work from. Study the placement of the positive and negative shapes within the frame of the picture- or simply put the figure and its environment.  Decide whether the image needs to be cropped, edited or added to. If you need to take more photos- do so.
Transfer the photos’ basic forms to your toned paper (brown and mid-tone gray). The size of the drawings should be small- 4” x 6” or 8” x 10.”

·        First do 4 value studies: with black charcoal, gray paper and white conte

·        Second do 8 warm and cool studies: with black charcoal, gray paper, brown paper, brown nupastel, white conte

Make sure you are experimenting with where and what you choice to be warm or cool and light or dark. The figures relationship with its environment must be developed and considered. Local color can be consider in some of the drawings but should not be the deciding factor. In others words, if the figure is posed in front of a red cabinet, the cabinet does not need to be warm in the drawing just because its local color is warm.

Grading Based On:
  • · Completion of requirements on time
  • · Exploration of value
  • · Exploration of warms and cools
  • · Thoughtfulness of project
  • · Ambition and creativity of project

Historical Example:

Although not an illustration of the homework assignment.  Study these three drawings by Degas. Notice the compositional similarities and differences. Although very similar in the positioning of the figures within the frame, the color and value range in each of these drawings is unique giving it a distinct feeling and sense of space.
