Drawing
yourself from the mid- thigh up (clothed) with one arm and hand in the
composition. Be creative with the gesture of your pose. In this drawing it is
important to consider the position of your ribcage (torso) to your pelvis
(hips). They must be angled or positioned differently from each other. This
self portrait should reflect your personality, artistic interests and your
development as an artist. This drawing must have a full value range and been
lit from one direct light source.
You
can use photos as reference for this drawing BUT NOT exclusively. Photos can be
useful for getting basic shapes, but they do not capture enough information to
develop a drawing with. A photo does not
have enough information to be your only resource. If you are using photo references, be
aware of how a camera flattens and simplifies the form. Typically the cast shadows will be too dark and harsh and the
interior shadows will be washes out or non-existent. This means we need to
supplement this information by using our knowledge of anatomy and basic drawing
techniques.
This
is a large drawing and the self portrait should fill most of the page.
