Project
Proposal
For your final you will propose
and complete a series of drawings that have a defined theme, subject and style;
in other words a body of work. Imagine
that you have been offered a show at a gallery and given 6 feet (tall) by 10
feet (length) worth of wall to adequately fill. In addition to the finished
drawings you will need an artist statement/proposal that accompanies the work. For
your final, you can complete any quantity of drawings, done in any size. The
only requirement is that you fill the space listed (6’ x 10’) with a reasonable
space between work (max: 12”). For example: you could chose to do nine drawings that are
8” x 10” or two drawings that are 36” x 48”. Your work must be on paper and
include the figure.
To
begin this series of drawings you must first decide on the subject material,
images, style and mediums of your body of work. Go over the list of questions
below and considered other questions that would be appropriate.
·
Do I want to use color?
·
Do I like to work large or small?
·
What drawings in the past have I done
that I enjoyed making? Why?
·
Is there a series of drawings that I
could do that would be best for a portfolio that I am already working on?
·
What type of images have I been
interested in before? Landscapes? Narrative drawings? Observational drawings?
Expressive drawings? Abstracted drawings?
·
What am I trying to share with the
viewer?
·
How will I make the drawings that I am
imagining?
·
What references do I need? Mirrors,
photos, artwork?
·
What materials would work best for my
ideas?
·
When choosing a material considered:
Tonal range, color range, flexibility, and your experience with that material.
Do not choose something that you have never worked.
You will start this project by
writing an artist’s statement. As your project develops you will revise and
rewrite this statement. This first draft will serve as a project proposal, not
unlike a statement that one would write for a grant or show proposal.
Your
Project Proposal should be at least two paragraphs of 4-5 sentences.
The
first paragraph: should outline your subject
material, theme, and artistic interests. What are going to draw and why.
The
second paragraph: should describe how you achieve this:
what materials, use of color, tonal range style, imagery working process.
Establish a direct connection to the subject of your drawing and the use of
materials/style. For example: if your subject is about depression mention how
you choose a dark black tonal range to create this feeling.
Make an outline before you
begin:
