Self Portrait with Chiaroscuro

Chiaroscuro (kiːˈɑːrə.ˈskʊroʊ, –ˈskjʊroʊ, Italian for light-dark) in art is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition.
Using compressed charcoal or black pastels you will draw a self-portrait using a strong bold value range. The resulting drawing should be in value only with no line or “texture.” I recommend lighting yourself with a single light source to heighten the affect. The composition and pose are entirely your choice, but I recommend considering the dramatic lighting and historical reference this value range implies and fitting your pose, composition and clothing to match.
Look up these historical artists for ideas; study their paintings as well as their drawings.
