In this assignment you incorporate
another artist’s work into your own. Choose an artist’s whose work you love and
find a particular drawing or painting by that artist. This piece should have
the charistics of that artist’s work that you admire. As you study this work,
articulate exactly what you like about this piece and the choices that the
artist made.
- What is the size and format of the piece?
- What are the materials used?
- How does the artist use line, tone, mark making?
- What is the tonal range of the piece?
- What is the quality of light in the drawing?
- What is the mood of the piece?
- Is the piece done from life?
- Is the figure distorted or exaggerated? If so why?
- What is the style of the piece?
- What is the composition like?
- Is the figure cropped?
- Is there a background?
- What is the figure’s relationship with its background?
As you consider these questions, look
at several works of art by that artist and see if there are stylistic choices
and themes that reoccur. Find a very good reproduction of work you have chosen.
The assignment is to draw your-self from the knees up from life and incorporate
the image of the master copy and in your drawing. The master copy can be included
in your drawing in a directly observed way, for example: you could include a
book in your drawing open to the image of the painting/ drawing or have the image
of the painting hung on the wall behind you. Or it could be included into the
background of your drawing. In addition, the style and choices in the drawing must
be influenced by the work of art you have selected. There are many ways that
you can suggest this influence, such as tonal range, use of materials,
depiction of the figure, composition, narrative and interaction with the
background.
